Very Interesting Question. This question may be analysed as below:
As a team leader you need to help / make them (new affiliates) understand, what is SFI & its Business strategies etc. which details/information's you are providing through your welcome letter and other individual own ideas, which one might have planned to treat new team members. Here normally you will explain how to start / proceed & earn VP, Fast Track etc. This is not too much in my opinion. If you go on explaining Duplication, ECA Programme, TConnect page. TrippleClicks etc. in the beginning it self, then for new affiliates i strongly feel its too much.
However SFI team mails are approaching affiliates on regular intervals for providing training with LAUNCHPAD lessons, E365 contest reminders, recaps etc. which is sufficient to encourage, motivate as well as to give thorough knowledge about SFI during initial stage..
On the other hand if your team members are very active, hard working and contacting you (Team Leader) frequently with various issues to learn and understand, then, you have to respond to them, & focus on the particular issue/question to Help.& satisfy. Here if you contact your team members through frequent team mails, then i think you are justifying yourself as an Awesome leader & its not too much.
