There are always different points of view on any subject. I have seen so many answers on this question that I have come to believe there is no right answer just different ways to see the most important traits of success.
I think Commitment is the beginning of success. When you have a dream you want to achieve, it stays a dream until you begin setting goals and working toward making it a reality. Goals are never reached if you give up, so having the ability to hold to a commitment is a very important quality. Persistence and perseverance are the fruit of that commitment after all the obstacles and trials you work through.
I found passion grows after time. In the beginning I get excited about the possibilities that I can achieve great things, like making a lot of money or traveling around the world or becoming famous. After the first month I found that excitement turns to disappointment and without a commitment it vanishes into an obscure after thought. Any one that has been married for more than ten years or has children to care for knows the value of commitment. It’s the same attitude you acquire when you have a JOB you can’t afford to lose. Passion begins to grow from the inside the closer you get to the goal, which you will not reach unless you are committed.
Learning is a necessity. It is funny how every time I start something I always have my own ideas about how and what I will do. “I’ll do it my way†like that old song by Frank Sinatra, is my theme song. I have a hard time with advice at this stage. It’s not until I have tried everything that does not work that I back up and look at all the things that have already been done. I may have saved years of labor if I had listened to council in the first place. Because I was committed to my dream I worked through my own self-created obstacles and became teachable. I could have given up but commitment kept me looking for solutions. Learning is a learned skill.
Becoming a teacher is not the same as becoming a leader. Leaders show the path they have traveled where teachers may only point the way. Great teachers are leaders. You cannot lead someone somewhere you have never been. I can show you how to join SFI but I cannot lead you to make a living on it if I have not done so myself. Commitment will get me to the day when I will be a great leader and I'll be a great teacher because I'll want share my knowledge and experience.
I have seen a lot of people with talent and intelligence fail, give up and settle for supporting someone else’s dream, we call them employees. Affiliates are future entrepreneurs in training. We are learning how to commit to our dreams in spite of any opposition. Commit to your dream and the solution to every problem will find you.
