What are the benefits of using an auto-responder system in SFI...or should I not use one?

One of the benefits of using auto-responder is, you have a generic, ready made response to your as a way of communication to people that are important for your business and it will save you time having to formulate your own. I will not recommend to use auto-responder in SFI, because you need to build a close relationship with your downline. It is easy to sense a response that is not coming from the heart.
