I would say that it depends on what your plans are for the day. Say you are at the mall; you can leave flyers on the benches or on seating areas and people will find them. From there, they will visit your gateway websites. Or, if you are going out to an event (usually for socializing) you can give out your business cards to people. Just hand them out and they will take them. Or, if you are traveling on the train, leave some flyers in the seat where you sat. It will be like you accidentally left them there.
This is called offline marketing. You are leaving information for people to look at in their own spare time. Be sure to include your gateway links so that they will sign up under you if they decide to join SFI and TripleClicks.

Is it possible to be successful in SFI even when your PSAs and CSAs do not work or have stopped working?

Yes, through continued online and offline marketing. When your PSAs and/or CSAs stop working, that's the point when you should stop focusing on them. You can continue to send them motivational e-mails, but you cannot make them do the work. It starts with them. They have to put in the effort. You are doing all that you can to try and help them out.
Once I notice that they've stopped working, I usually focus on gaining more PSAs or CSAs onto my team because I know that when I do it that way, I have a better chance at gaining more people that will want to do the work to succeed. But regardless of what happens, you still send those PSA/CSA mailers because you never know - the ones that have stopped working may have a change of heart and start working again. So don't totally give up on them, you want to show that you are a Leader that they can still depend on.

I usually do this through the power of social media. I've created a Facebook page in order to attempt to attract some new affiliates. I'm also about to create a new Twitter account. You also have to think about the kind of approach that you want to bring to people who may convert into new affiliates under you. Make sure that your approach is positive at all times, and present as much information from SFI and TripleClicks as much as you can. Be as creative as you can, and don't forget to use the free marketing aids through your SFI homepage.

Complete your To-Do List on a daily basis, buy TCredits (you can double or triple or etc. your orders in order to double your VPs), participate in auctions using your TCredits, and if you have enough MRP (Member Rewards Points), use those to purchase stuff on TripleClicks in order to earn even more VPs. There are so many strategies on SFI in order to be successful. Always take advantage of those strategies because the good thing is that there isn't just one.
What is the best way to convince someone who is over 50 that they should get started with SFI?

There is the saying that "you cannot show an old dog new tricks", but that's not always true. And SFI proves this saying to not be true at all. You CAN show them SFI, what's new with it, and how they can get started if they decide to. The key here is just sharing information with them, letting them know how it works. From there, they can decide what it is that they want to do. We cannot force anyone to join no matter what age they are; they have to make that decision for themselves. And although the information on SFI provided for all affiliates seems like "info overload", it's actually not like that. The information is there to help guide them as they go along, but to also ask you specific questions just in case they do not understand something. So what I would just do is just show them the information, share it, explain how it works, and then from there they will either decide that they want to do it, or not. The choice is up to them; your job is easy, all you have to do is share. Good luck!

Are there any shortcuts to success in SFI for new affiliates?

Continuously buying TCredits on TripleClicks.com to earn more VPs, and both offline and online marketing are ways in which they can fast track to the next higher levels. The marketing will help them to gain more PSAs onto their team so that they can show them how to duplicate their efforts in order to begin to earn commissions/residual income. Hope this helps!
