All goals should be personal as everyone's 'Why' is as different as their personality.
Having said that, I use a combination of short-term and medium-term goals that lead up to the long-term goals as I have found this works best for me. The shorter length goals build the skills to get to the bigger goal.
I use SMART for my goals.
This means that goals should be:
Specific - Don't say about getting that new car, write down the make, model, colour, etc., and when.
Measurable - How will I know when I've reached my goal?
Attainable - Do I have or can I learn the skills to attain this goal?
Realistic - Am I willing AND able to work towards this goal?
Timely - Put a realistic date on it! It gives you a target to aim at.
Reward yourself for reaching a goal using rewards that match the goal - small goal achieved, small reward.
And always remember that with properly planned goals, you CAN do it!
