Marketing the ECA program by phone can be an effective way to refer ECAs, and your local phone book's Yellow Pages (or other business directory) can provide you with hundreds or thousands of phone numbers to get started immediately.

3. DOOR-TO-DOOR

If your city has a business district, you can go from business to business dropping off ECA literature.
The simplest way would be to drop off a copy of the ECA Brochure. To use this brochure, you'll simply need to stamp or print your SFI ID on the back cover so that you are credited with signups generated by your brochures.
Ideally, you should put it in the hands of the owner or store manager. If that's not possible (or you're not ready yet for "high level confrontations"), you can hand the brochure to a clerk or other store employee and request that they deliver it to the owner or store manager on your behalf. Be sure to thank them for doing this.
Also providing a business card, while not absolutely necessary, is a good idea. It adds professionalism and, more importantly, provides your prospects your contact information in case they'd like to ask you some questions later.
Could you use less expensive, copied fliers instead of the brochures? You can, but they probably will not make as good of an impression as the full-color brochures, and that could be the difference between a successful signup and no signup.
TIPS:
(a). Dress appropriately ("casual business" recommended) while you're making your rounds.
(b). You might consider stapling your business card to the brochure (or flier) to keep them together.

The most important component of a successful direct mail campaign is a good mailing list. By using phone books and other printed directories, you can create good quality mailing lists of prospective businesses in your area. You can also use online directories to create and/or augment your list.
Note: Do not approach this as a one-time thing. The ECA program is going to get bigger and better over the coming months and years. Therefore, keep or database all your prospect company addresses, phone numbers, etc. that you collect so that you can do follow-ups in the coming months.
