As an ECA myself, I have done my research into the complete ECA Program, which means finding out EVERYTHING, including "Dropshipping". Say for example you have an item that you can sell as an ECA, physical not digital, that needs to be designed, made then shipped directly to your customer, who expects it soon because it's already paid.
How do you think you can do it most effectively?
Your first expense is to order a "prototype", an "original" that you can list.
From there you have a few options, depending on your agreement with your supplier.
1) You must place an order along with the prototype, say 1- to 100, and pay for that too, upfront, and have them delivered directly to you (another expense), so that you can complete the orders yourself, with more shipping expenses.
On the positive side, this could work if
a) you have enough money to pay upfront, and
b) you have a top-seller.
That would be a great investment, and you could then negotiate a better unit price from your supplier on your next order.
2) You must place an order for the prototype only, and pay for it to be sent to you.
Instead of buying more right away, you can still list it immediately as an ECA.
If your supplier agrees to dropship your orders, you will still be responsible for paying upfront for orders that you send to your supplier to fulfill and ship directly to your customers, but you do not need to buy inventory after you have listed the item.
Please read all the details about the ECA Program.
I hope this answers your question.
