Thanks for this good Question.
I Personally have tried several of the SFI gateways, thanks to SFI for providing different one which any Affiliate can use to advertise his/her SFI business. The different gateways are found in this link https://www.sfimg.com/MyAccount/GatewayList.
One that has worked for me greatly is the http://www.sfi.biz/xxxxxxx where xxxxx is my SFI ID. I've included this on several traffic exchange websites and on many social networks. The good thing is even facebook that used to reject the http://www.sfi4.com/xxxxxx/FREE has no problem with this gateway. This makes it the best in my own knowledge.
The others I would recommend is the http://www.tripleclicks.com/xxxxxx/pbgw. This gateway shows different auction items that have been won previously from TripleClicks. It displays good images for TripleClicks acution items and the price that was paid for them , being that someone can win an auction and pay a discount of upto 99% for an Item, then this gateway, I highly recomend.
Then comes the TripleClicks gateway. http://www.tripleclicks.com/xxxxxx. This is a good one to target people who love shopping. Considering the thousands of products found at the TripleClicks store which can be got at reduced prices.
I hope this answer is helpful to everyone.

In one sentence, how do you respond when someone asks you about the business you are involved in?

I would say "SFI is an Affiliate Internet Marketing business with FREE signup, that pays you monthly commissions from purchases done by your sponsored affiliates from TripleClicks, products sold by ECA's that you have referred on TripleClicks, Versa Points obtained each month which give you a share in the TripleClicks executive Pool.
Why does it seem like everyone who joins SFI think it's get-rich-quick?

You are right to ask and I can verily say many of whom are successful with SFI first thought the same way. This comes down to a few reasons.
1. Many people have been manipulated on the internet with get rich schemes. When they come along SFI from a search engine or a blog even those refereed by an affiliate they most times conclude this way.
2. Many Others fail to be Patient with SFI, they think about creating a2a page, going through the Lauch Pad series and starting with the great information from the SFI Basics page as a waste of time.
3. There is a laziness in the minds of people. This leads them to think they will put a few dollars some where and then sit at home and wait for a big check at the end of the month. This is wrong and that's why people who develop "get rich quick schemes" succeed because they find desperate, lazy people who are not willing to work.
Finally I would love to appreciate the work done by Gery and the SFI Team for setting up a sincere and educative way of earning from the Internet. I believe the Sky is the Limit with SFI.

When should we give up on CSAs who don't respond to our messages or do anything?

Its a good question and on this am giving you exactly what I am doing because I have the same problem.
1) I keep on writing to them even when they do not reply or ask any questions because it's my duty as their sponsor to help them. Some of them may be have been manipulated some where else and they think SFI is just like any other easy money making scheme out there but when they notice your persistence and care may be they will change and start communicating. That is why I haven't given up even up to now.
2). Yes, I agree with what Gery says "Work with Workers" but if it doesn't hurt you sending that email since you just type one message that goes to all you CSA's and PSA's, so just keep doing it. In any business there will be bad days and downfalls but it doesn't mean you stop working.

What's the best incentive to offer new affiliates?

Right now, you are looking at your Affiliates as Students enrolling in your college where you are the Principal. So how do you handle students in a college and on SFI terms new Affiliates?
1) Make them feel welcome and give them every reason to sign in to SFI the next day.
2) Give them no reason to doubt your availability to help them.
3) Encourage them at least once in two days by sending them group emails on how to move on in their SFI business.
4) Lead them by example. You wouldn't want your Affiliates to be higher than you are in rank.
5) Invest a few hours a day to them by learning and reading and then later share your knowledge with them.
6) Remember at the start it might be too much work but as time goes on they will do more of the work. However this all depends on how much you invested in them.
