How can I best respond to an affiliate who feels they worked hard but are unhappy with their first commission?

I would express how excited that they made a commission at all the first month. There is so much learning that has to be done to achieve maximum results. Keep on going, there is a rainbow out there and you must not give up now! You have already put in so much time and effort. Maybe they need to reevaluate their calendar and use different methods than that of the last month. Plan your success and work you plan!
Where can I find SFI success stories? And/or perhaps YOU have one to share?

Research your up line. They should be able to share in their successes and failures. Not everyone wants to share the failures so don't expect to hear much on those. I believe the true success if your continued belief and work ethic to change when something isn't working and lean toward something that is working. Plan your work and work your plan.
