This is a very good and important question.
Online Social Media has become an incredibly powerful force in today's world, and, if used correctly, can be used to reach thousands of people with one's advertising and marketing, however, the rules they impose can be very frustrating and even negatively impact your efforts.
There are several other options available to advertise online, but you must plan ahead and be prepared to use them. The following are some of my recommendations:
1) Safelists - Safelists are a result of the CAN-SPAM Act enacted by the FCC in 2013 to protect consumers from "Unwanted Commercial Electronic Mail". What this means is that consumers "opt-in" to receive commercial electronic mail voluntarily, and, by viewing other people's ads, receive credits to send their ads to others that have joined. Memberships range from 500 - 10,000.
2) Traffic Exchanges - Similar to Safelists, Traffic Exchanges actually present one's ads to "opt-in" members in REAL time. View Ratios vary among different Exchanges, however, one is guaranteed their ads will be viewed. Memberships range from 1,000 - 1,000,000.
3) Online Classifieds - BEWARE of Craigslist! It is NOT amenable to affiliate ads of any type. However, there are many legitimate Online Classified sites that will allow one to advertise their business, especially in your local area. Most are easy to set up, similar to a newspaper ad.
In summary, most of the advertising avenues I've suggested are free to join and use. Upgrading comes at a cost, but that is optional, depending on your budget.
I hope this helps and good luck in your advertising endeavors.
