To be a leader, you must have a team to lead. To grow as a leader, you must work at improving your leadership skills and habits. You must know which direction you are leading them and if that is the correct route to the correct destination. We must not lead astray.
These are the things that I am working on to improve my leadership skills:
> Communication skills are the most important leadership skills to hone. A single wrong word can destroy an affiliate's will to build this business. I work on showing a positive attitude even when things are difficult. Every problem has a solution and can be turned around so something good comes of it. I try to find that solution.
I work on shortening my letters, but keeping good content. You might need to work on longer letters with more useful content. I try to keep interest with a catchy subject line. I do not begrudge the time I spend working on each communication whether it is for a single person or the whole group. If it is worth saying, it is worth saying well, in a way that the affiliate will want to finish reading the letter. I hope to never bring the reaction from an affiliate that says, "oh, no, not my sponsor again."
> I am working on being a great example to my team. I participate in most all of the SFI/TC activities, buy from TripleClicks, play the auctions, read and write in the Forum, and ASK SC. I make goals, and hit my goals, and study the materials provided, and the ebooks I buy so that I can answer their questions. I help them with advertising and prioritizing. An affiliate can still feel abandoned even with lots of mail from his sponsor if the sponsor doesn't guide his PSA through the steps that he must take to actually build his business and achieve success.
> A leader works to strengthen his team, not weaken it. Coddling just one member will weaken the whole team. Helping a weak member is not coddling him. It takes a leader to decide where the boundary is and to arrive at the correct decisions about this member. I keep track of my teams vp especially when I offer help of any kind. I write the date, what I did and what his vp for that date is. Then I check it before I write to him again and base the next step on his present progress.
> Setting goals is also important. They help you see where you are going, where you must go to get there, and why you want to go there in the first place. A trip without a destination may never get out of the driveway. I am trying to encourage my team to write down their goals, as I write down mine.
> Organization is important for the remembrance of what you have said, what you have done, and what your team has said and done. I'm constantly looking for better ways to organize my in- and out- going email, and my team mails so that I can remember what I have promised, what's done, what needs doing, and correspondence from the members of my team.
Working at making your team feel liked, wanted and helped will help you have a team that is not only willing, but eager to follow you in this business.
